Top 10 Construction Equipment Manufacturer in the World

According to Yellow Table published by International Construction magazine, the 2019 world’s top 10 Construction original equipment manufacturer (OEM) by sales are as below table: 

The list was based on the construction sector only and excluded other sector sales like energy and mining. The construction equipment includes earthmoving, material handling, concrete equipment, and power access equipment. 

In the year 2019, the yellow brand Caterpillar remains the top brand and the largest OEM in the world with a total sales of USD 23.2 billion sales. Komatsu remains comfortably in the second spot with total sales of USD 22 billion, tightly followed behind Caterpillar. Two Chinese-based brands XCMG and Sany remain competitive in the list thanks to high construction demand in the local China market. 

Caterpillar and Komatsu dominate 12.6% and 11.9% of total market shares of construction equipment. The top 10 construction equipment manufacturers conquer a total of 60% world market share where the remaining go to the rest of the smaller OEM. 

Instead of focusing on individual companies, let us focus on a country and region basis. In terms of market share, US-based OEM is no longer the top leader in the list. Japanese-based manufacturer overtakes US to become the world largest OEM. The top two countries were followed by China, Germany, and Sweden, but never came close. The large contribution comes from Japan, China, and South Korea which has made Asia region base OEM to be the biggest manufacturer in the world.

Earthmoving equipment takes the largest share in the market. The various type of excavators has accounted for 56% of total construction equipment market demand. 

In China alone, the total sales of construction equipment increase 37% in the year 2018 and bring the total unit sales to 343,817. Excavator alone has 203,420 units sold in 2018, with a growth of 45% compared to the previous year.
